FLAVOUR OF THE MONTH = TURBULENCE: Ten things which shaped a stormy narrative in October at Vicarage Road

Watford lurched from defensive meltdowns in back-to-back defeats to social media rebellion against owner Gino Pozzo and confected controversy over a two-night hotel stopover 3.3 miles from the training ground

Even by Watford’s colourful standards, it has been a turbulent month.

Calamitous defeats, Hornets godfather Sir Elton John piping up to register his dismay, fans taking up the baton with a campaign against owner Gino Pozzo on social media (which failed to materialise as tangible mutiny at the next home game), old favourite Troy Deeney pinpointing the start of Watford’s decline from the FA Cup final in 2019 and now a confected drama about an alleged boot camp in a five-star hotel - a contradiction in terms if ever there was one.

If head coach Alessio Dionisi goes trick-or-treating on Hallowe’en, he probably won’t know if he’ll come home to a pocketful of penny chews, a hollowed pumpkin head on his doorstep or breathing space in the Championship relegation battle.
