All good things come to an end, and Watford’s unbeaten start in the Championship was deservedly punctured at Swansea.
The same group of players who had emptied the tank against Southampton, Wrexham and West Ham needed substantial back-up, and while the identity parade of deadline-day mugshots in replica shirts kept the Hornets’ publicity department busy back at London Colney, the reservoir had run too low to bring anything home from south Wales.
Bizarrely, there was more angst among supporters about the club’s activity in the final hours of the transfer window than on the pitch, so let’s cut straight to the chase.
