Sky commentator Bill Leslie’s “Do Not Scratch Your Eyes” soundbite, reporter Johnny Phillips’ ‘scoregasm’ on the gantry and Gianfranco Zola’s comedy fall in the celebrations deservedly went viral.
LUTHER BLISSETT (Manchester United 1-2 Watford, League Cup third round 1978): Some of us woke up the neighbours leaping out of our armchairs watching the highlights on BBC’s Sportsnight without knowing the score. Technically, our Favourite Son’s equaliser was just as good, but the soaring header from Dennis Booth’s cross for the winner catapulted Luther, and Watford, into the national headlines - and they never really left the spotlight.
