Reporting for their excursion to the Welsh hinterlands, Watford’s youth team squad assembled by the minibus and speculated what lay in store for them.
They thought coach Kenny Jackett was taking them on a bonding trip. It turned out to be a boot camp that would have made Bear Grylls’ eyes water.
Bruce Dyer, who would soon become English football’s first million-pound teenager, turned up in a dress code best suited to a nightclub or all-night rave. His attire would prove to be a top-class wardrobe malfunction when Jackett presented his teenage flock with a gruelling agenda of mountaineering, abseiling, camping, canoeing and hiking.
